Ceramic Artist Series · Hybrid Chawan
Designed and handmade by ceramic artist Shiqing, this pouring bowl represents a poetic fusion of two historic crafts from Zibo, China—ceramics and glass. For centuries, these traditions developed independently; in this piece, they meet in quiet harmony.
Each bowl is wheel-thrown by hand and finished with a soft white glaze. During firing, a small piece of green glass is fused into the center of the bowl, naturally forming fine crackle patterns as it melts and settles into the glaze. The resulting green focal point resembles an island emerging from the sea—hence the name “绿洲” This subtle green accent echoes the color of matcha and tea, allowing tradition to gently illuminate everyday rituals.

Handmade Characteristics
This is a handcrafted ceramic piece, not an industrially produced item. Natural variations are to be expected and appreciated, including:
-
Subtle differences in glaze tone and color
-
Fine crackle patterns (crazing) on the glaze surface
-
Small pinholes (“glaze eyes”) caused by organic materials burning out during firing
-
Occasional iron specks resulting from natural minerals in the clay or glaze
-
Slight variations in size, shape, and glaze flow
These features are inherent to handmade ceramics and reflect the authenticity, individuality, and warmth of the making process rather than defects.
Ideal for tea pouring, matcha preparation, or as a contemplative everyday vessel, this bowl offers a quiet balance between craftsmanship, material, and use.
